Getting The Necessary Information
In cases of emergency, your family members must know where to get information.
Stress the importance of being aware and getting involved. Discuss this among
family members. Ready information is available on the internet. Read
newspapers, watch the TV news, listen to radio, read "how to" and
"guide" books to prepare for the unexpected. Warnings and/or
alerts are usually announced on the mentioned forms of media. Also, be an
active member of your community. You will get valuable information and help the
neighborhood along the way.
Planning Ahead
Develop your personal emergency plan. Consider the possible emergency
situations or potential disasters you could face. Talk to your family and
get their views and assistance in creating a plan that you and your family can
follow. Be familiar with your home's floor plan and escape routes. Everybody
should know where to turn off utilities such as gas, electricity and water.
Your plans could help reduce the possible effects of any emergency or disaster. Also, find out whether your child's school has any emergency plans. Teach
your child how to deal with strangers, how to call for help, and what to do if
there is no help available.
Spend your free time wisely. Attend a class on First Aid and get trained
on CPR. You become an important part of this world if you know how to
save a life.
Emergency Contact List
Your Emergency Contact List includes your relatives and friends living within
or outside your area. Have the list wrapped in plastic to avoid being damaged
by water. Data necessary should be full name, nick name, address, email
address, telephone numbers (home, work, mobile). Make several copies and put
one inside your Emergency Kit. Children should also know all emergency numbers
in your area to call for help when it is needed.
